Goliad State Park
Goliad, Texas began as one of the oldest Spanish colonial municipalities in the state. It was established in 1749 when it was decided to move Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga Mission and its royal protector, Nuestra Señora de Loreto de La Bahía del Espíritu Santo Presidio (Presidio La Bahía), from the Guadalupe River to a site on the San Antonio River. A new presidio, La Bahía, was built on a hill near the river. Mission Espíritu Santo stood on the opposite bank.
Goliad State Park contains a refurnished replica of Mission Nuestra Senora del Espíritu Santo de Zuniga, reconstructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s.
This mission was the first large cattle ranch in Texas.
