Bastrop State Park 2007
Bastrop and Buescher State parks are located approximately 30 miles southeast of Austin. Bastrop is 5,926 acres and Buescher 1016.7 acres. Bastrop was opened in 1937 and Buescher in 1940. Much of the infrastructure dates from the Civilian Conservation Corps. The two parks are connected by a 12-mile scenic road.
Bastrop and Buescher State Parks is the site of the famous "Lost Pines," an isolated timbered region of loblolly pine and hardwoods. The Lost Pines are significant in that they represent the westernmost stand of loblolly pine trees in the United States, separated from the East Texas Pineywoods by nearly 100 miles. The pines have become genetically unique, having adapted to 30% less rainfall than loblollies from East Texas and adjacent states.
The park has lots of recreational opportunities, including nice hiking trails and lots of (hilly) roads for biking. There are several campgrounds including one with hookups as well as rustic cabins.
